· Wear and tear/erosion of roads, especially unpaved roads
· Waste and pollution

Impact detail
Detailed potential environmental impact information

Many of the partners that humanitarian assistance stakeholders work with do not have solid waste management plans, despite acknowledging the challenges associated with solid waste management (particularly plastic waste).

As a result, packaging waste is not consistently addressed across the humanitarian assistance sector and there are few third-party monitoring regulations in place to ensure that implementing partners are held responsible for packaging waste management.

Include environmental sustainability in certification.

Lessons Learnt
Lessons from past experiences

Independent monitoring of agencies responding to the Nepal earthquake found that drivers all came from the same caste and gender.

When this was highlighted, action was taken to improve diversity. This brought an additional benefit of diverse contribution to local knowledge, customs, and even engagement with beneficiaries and understanding of the local environment.
