Guidance
Virtual Environmental and Humanitarian Adviser Tool – (VEHA Tool) is a tool
to easily integrate environmental considerations in humanitarian response. Field Implementation guidances are useful for the design and execution of humanitarian activities in the field.
The condition of roads might not be optimal for transportation which can increase the risks to the shipment. Therefore, experienced drivers are needed, especially those that are used to the local road conditions or risks that may appear.
Drivers are an essential component to self-managed fleets, equally as important as the vehicles themselves. Even if an organisation has a perfectly maintained fleet, poor quality drivers or lack of investment in driver training can lead to accidents, damages, cargo loss, and possibly issues with fines or lawsuits.
Promote equality of opportunity and inclusion for drivers, technicians, and logisticians including minorities and people living with disabilities.
Air pollution
Soil pollution
Water pollution
Climate change
· Vehicle greenhouse gas emissions
· Soil and water pollution from fuel spills or vehicle accidents
· Wear and tear/erosion of roads, especially unpaved roads
· Waste and pollution
Much of the environmental impact of the humanitarian sector can be attributed to logistics, such as through carbon (and other) emissions linked to the transport of goods and personnel, the manufacturing of relief items, and waste generated through their packaging.
Assess vehicle conditions and monitor accidents to reduce environmental impact.
Risk analyses of shipments.
Assessment of vehicle conditions and monitoring of vehicle accidents can assist in reducing environmental impact.
Carry out a risk analysis in relation to the shipment, identifying potential threats and cargo vulnerabilities and implementing the necessary actions to minimise risks.
Independent monitoring of agencies responding to the Nepal earthquake found that drivers all came from the same caste and gender.
When this was highlighted, action was taken to improve diversity. This brought an additional benefit of diverse contribution to local knowledge, customs, and even engagement with beneficiaries and understanding of the local environment.
