Guidance
Virtual Environmental and Humanitarian Adviser Tool – (VEHA Tool) is a tool
to easily integrate environmental considerations in humanitarian response. Field Implementation guidances are useful for the design and execution of humanitarian activities in the field.
The condition of roads might not be optimal for transportation which can increase the risks to the shipment. Therefore, experienced drivers are needed, especially those that are used to the local road conditions or risks that may appear.
Drivers are an essential component to self-managed fleets, equally as important as the vehicles themselves. Even if an organisation has a perfectly maintained fleet, poor quality drivers or lack of investment in driver training can lead to accidents, damages, cargo loss, and possibly issues with fines or lawsuits.
Promote equality of opportunity and inclusion for drivers, technicians, and logisticians including minorities and people living with disabilities.

· Vehicle greenhouse gas emissions
· Loss, waste, and pollution from damaged transported goods
· Wear and tear/erosion of roads, especially unpaved roads
· Waste and pollution
Waste from damage or loss of transported goods.
Pollution from hazardous inks on labels.
Excess packaging leading to unsustainable quantities of solid waste.
Undegradable packaging such as expanded polyurethane.
Risk analysis to reduce potential waste.
Clear labeling to reduce loss.
Use of sustainable inks on labels.
Check consignment quantity and quality, and notify the transporter of any discrepancy.
Reduce waste:
Risk analysis to reduce potential losses.
Clear labeling to reduce loss. Use of sustainable inks on labels. Sustainable; minimum required packaging to prevent loss; ban the use of expanded polyurethane packaging; Promote the use of biodegradable fill chips/foam packaging.
Identification and mitigation of hazards.
When receiving a consignment, check the quantity and the quality, and notify the transporter of any discrepancy.
Independent monitoring of agencies responding to the Nepal earthquake found that drivers all came from the same caste and gender.
When this was highlighted, action was taken to improve diversity. This brought an additional benefit of diverse contribution to local knowledge, customs, and even engagement with beneficiaries and understanding of the local environment.
